New York Stock Exchange :: NYC

[sniplet pano]

The history of the New York Stock Exchange begins with the signing of the Buttonwood Agreement by twenty-four New York City stockbrokers and merchants on May 17, 1792, outside 68 Wall Street under a Buttonwood tree.

In 1903, the Exchange moved into its present home at 18 Broad st, a building of neoclassic design by architect George B. Post, with a trading floor measuring 109 x 140 feet and marble walls rising 72 feet to meet the ornate gilt ceiling, at the time, one of the grandest spaces in the nation. Today, the NYSE building is considered one of Post’s masterpieces and is a New York City and national landmark.

[sniplet pano2]

One of the most familiar features of the New York Stock Exchange is the loud, distinctive Trading Floor bell. the Opening Bell signals the beginning of trading each business day and the Closing Bell signals the ending of trading each business day.

Bells were introduced when continuous trading was instituted in the 1870s. Originally, a Chinese Gong was used, but brass bells have been used since 1903.

The New York Public Library was the largest marble building ever built in the U.S. when it opened in 1911, using 530,000 cubic feet of marble.

The Main Reading Room is a majestic public space, measuring seventy-eight feet by two hundred and ninety-seven feet — roughly the length of two city blocks — and weaving together Old World architectural elegance with modern technology. The award-wining restoration of this room was completed in 1998.

Here, patrons can read or study at long oak tables lit by elegant bronze lamps, beneath fifty-two foot tall ceilings decorated by dramatic murals of vibrant skies and billowing clouds

[sniplet pano2]

The walls in the McGraw Rotunda are decorated with murals depicting the evolution of the printed word. Here, you can see Moses bringing the tablets down from the mountain. Another depicts the Gutenberg Press. Visitors can view one of the rare Gutenberg Bibles in the Edna Barnes Solomon Exhibition Room adjoining the rotunda.

[sniplet pano3]

Astor Hall, at the entrance, with its unique stone vault above an awesome white marble interior, sets the tone for the architectural delights that lie in store for the visitor. Sumptuous light brackets, elaborately decorated ceilings, the great gallery extending along the north-south axis of the building on the first floor, the window bays, the doorways, the great stairways, all combine to lift the human spirit and dignify man's achievements. The elaborately decorated Main Reading Room, almost two city blocks in length, located at the top of the building for light and quiet, is a fitting climax to all that the architects wished to achieve.

Cunard Hall :: New York

[sniplet pano]

Built in 1921 as a ticket office for the Cunard Passenger Ship Line, the grand interior of the Great Hall of the Cunard Building shows how the popular Beaux Art style was adapted to a new use. The architect Benjamin Wistar Morris collaborated with muralist Ezra Winter to produce a decorative program focused on shipping themes, set within a huge vaulted space that recalls Roman bath buildings. In contrast to the ceremonial Great Hall, the exterior is a simple Renaissance facade topped with a relatively undistinguished high-rise. The Great Hall was converted into a branch of the U.S. Postal Service in 1977.

[sniplet pano2]

"What matters most …is its great booking hall, with its elaborately decorated groined and conical vaults. It was in this grand setting that passage on such liners as the Queen Mary and the two Queen Elizabeths was purchased."

In any event, the ticketing hall will drop your jaw and make you long for the days of great oceanliners. A May 21, 1921 article in The New York Times described the 65-foot-high, 185-foot-long hall as "a series of mural decorative effects probably unsurpassed in the annals of commercial building construction."

"From the tinted plaster background of these figures the observer gets his first hint of the blaze of color in which the whole scheme of decorations is conceived. Warm, heavy blues, reds, yellows, umbers and tans predominate to blend in a whole reminiscent of the talian primitives. Passing on into a groined vault you look up to see the seals of English shipping towns as a central fature while below in niches connecting the vaults with the walls of Roman Travertine stone are bas-reliefs portraying the four winds and the four sesons. At the far end of the hall, the Greenwich Street side, is a smilar groined vault, similarly treated. Between them is the great central dome containing four roundels of mythological marble figures. Below this dome on the four pendentives are large representations of the vessels in which Leif Ericsson, Columbus, Cabot and Drake pioneered on the Atlantic Ocean. In panels on the walls are maps of the continents executed by Barry Faulkner on the theory of Mercator's projection but treated deoratively with the same glow of color and touch of mythogical interest"

Chelsea Hotel :: New York City

[sniplet pano2]

The twelve-story red-brick building that now houses the Hotel Chelsea was built in 1883, and opened in 1884 as one of the city's first private apartment cooperatives. At the time Chelsea, and particularly the street on which the hotel was located, was the center of New York's Theater District. However, within a few years the combination of economic worries and the relocation of the theaters bankrupted the Chelsea cooperative. In 1905, the building was purchased and opened as a hotel. Since 1946, the hotel has been managed by the Bard family, and until recently was run by David Bard and his 72-year-old father Stanley Bard who took over as managing director from his father in 1955.

[sniplet pano]

The hotel has always been a center of artistic and bohemian activity and it houses artwork created by many of the artists who have visited. The hotel was the first building to be listed by New York City as a cultural preservation site and historic building of note.

Famous guests include Jimi Hendrix, Tom Waits, Stanley Kubrik, Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Jean-Paul Sartre, Mark Twain, William Burroughs, Edith Piaf, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sid Vicious, and many others...

On June 18, 2007, the hotel's board of directors ousted Bard as the hotel's manager. Marlene Krauss, a doctor who is the chief executive of KBL Healthcare Ventures, and David Elder, one of the heirs of an original owner who lives in California, replaced Stanley Bard with management company BD Hotels NY, L.L.C., who have since been terminated. Residents are fighting to return the Bards as managers and majority shareholders to the day to day management of the Chelsea Hotel and have mounted a campaign of banners, art pranks and other protests toward this end.

Support to restore the Bards has come from Actors, Writers, Musicians and other former guests of the hotel, and the effort has gained international attention and support.

Named for naturalist and artist John James Audubon, on whose former land the complex sits, and who is buried across the street, Audubon Terrace was commissioned by railroad heir and philanthropist Archer M. Huntington in 1907. Among the well-known architects who designed the buildings were Cass Gilbert, Stanford White, and Charles Pratt Huntington. Huntington designed the original buildings, housing the Hispanic Society, American Geographical Society, Museum of the American Indian, and American Numismatic Society. The two buildings housing the Academy of Arts and Letters were completed in 1923 and 1930, respectively. A large equestrian statue of the legendary Spanish knight El Cid, located in the plaza in front of the Hispanic Society, was sculpted by Archer Huntington’s wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1927.
