The Mall and Bethesda Terrace are the main formal elements in Olmsted and Vaux’s design for Central Park, flanking the 40-foot-wide Mall are quadruple rows of American Elms. The elm was one of the designers’ favorite trees, providing a living cathedral ceiling high over the walkway. The Mall is breathtaking in any season. In the spring, the sun filtering through the translucent leaves seems to tint the atmosphere a lime-green. As the canopy matures over the summer, it creates a cool dense shade for the landscape below. When autumn’s yellow and gold leaves fall, they reveal the bold architecture of the trees’ skeletons. A fresh winter snow creates a lace veil in the black and white tree branches.

Since its opening in 1936, the Akeley Hall of African Mammals has been considered one of the world’s greatest museum displays. The hall is named after Carl Akeley (1864-1926), the explorer, conservationist, taxidermist, sculptor, and photographer who conceived of, designed, and collected for the hall. All the mammal dioramas in the Museum were created using his highly refined taxidermy and mounting techniques. The animals have been reconstructed with such scientific accuracy and detail that they appear astoundingly lifelike. Akeley’s meticulous attention to veracity, which was applied to the plants, the painted backgrounds, and even the lighting in the dioramas, resulted in faithful and vivid reproductions of the worlds that he wanted to preserve.

The 28 dioramas in this hall, true works of art, depict some of the many animals and habitats of Africa, from the bongo and mandrill of the dense rain forests to the impala and elephant of the savannah. Carl Akeley had a lifelong devotion to the continent of Africa and the conservation of its beautiful wilderness areas. He traveled there many times, embarking on three expeditions for the Museum. During his final expedition, he fell ill and died. He was buried in Albert National Park (now Virunga National Park), the first wildlife sanctuary in central Africa, which he had helped to establish. The mountain location of his grave is near the scene depicted in the gorilla diorama in this hall.

LOVE :: New York City (Sculpture by Robert Indiana)

Indiana’s best known image is the word love in upper-case letters, arranged in a square with a tilted letter O. This image, first created for a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964, was included on an eight-cent United States Postal Service postage stamp in 1973, the first of their regular series of “love stamps.”

Infamously, Indiana failed to register the copyright for his catchy image and found it difficult to deter unauthorized use. The image has been reproduced and parodied countless times in sculptures, posters, and 3-D desk ornaments. It has been rendered in Hebrew, Chinese, and Spanish. It strongly influenced the original book cover for Erich Segal’s novel Love Story. A parody appeared on a Rage Against the Machine album cover, Renegades, as well as the cover for Oasis’ single ‘Little by Little’ from the 2002 album Heathen Chemistry. London artist D*Face recently parodied the image by rendering the word hate with the A tilted. Belgian artist Eddy Gabriel made a version using the word lost. Evan Greenfield updated the sculpture with his sculpture “I’m Lovin’ It”.

Brooklyn Public Library :: New York City

The Central Library is adjacent to Prospect Park, just south of Grand Army Plaza, where Eastern Parkway and Flatbush Avenue intersect. Designed by Alfred Morton Githens and Francis Keally, the building resembles an open book, with the spine at the main entrance on the plaza, and the two wings running along the avenues. Construction began in 1912 and was completed in 1941. It opened on February 1, 1941. The Central Library was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1997.

Special collections within the Central Library include the renowned Brooklyn Collection, which includes photographs, manuscripts, clippings, books, maps, prints, and ephemera, chronicling the history of the borough.

Unisphere :: Flushing Meadows Corona Park :: Queens :: New York City

Originally built for the 1964 NYC Worlds Fair, Unisphere is a 12-story high, spherical stainless steel representation of the Earth. Located in Flushing Meadows Park in the Borough of Queens, New York City, the Unisphere is one of the Borough’s most iconic and enduring symbols.

Designed by landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, the Unisphere was donated by the United States Steel Corporation and constructed by that company’s American Bridge Division. It is the world’s largest global structure, rising 140 feet and weighing 700,000 pounds. Some sources say the Unisphere weighs 900,000 pounds, a figure which includes the additional weight of its 100-ton inverted tripod base. The diameter of the sphere itself is 120 feet, or 36.57 meters. It is constructed of Type 304L Stainless Steel.

Founded in 1808 by Captain Robert Richard Randall (for whom the nearby neighborhood of Randall Manor is named), Sailors Snug Harbor was the first and only home for retired merchant seamen in the history of the United States, when it opened in 1833. By 1900 it housed approximately 1,000 ex-sailors; however this number would decline soon after the Social Security system was implemented in the United States, and by the mid-1950s less than 200 residents remained.

On September 12, 1976, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center was officially opened to the public

Cloud Gate is a public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in Millennium Park, Chicago. The sculpture is shaped like an ellipse, and its legume-like appearance has caused it to be nicknamed “The Bean”. It is made of 168 highly polished stainless steel plates, and stands at 33 feet high, 66 feet long, and 42 feet wide, weighing 110 tons. From a distance it could be mistaken for a huge drop of mercury, while up close its highly reflective surface captures and transforms the skyline, the downtown cityscape and even the passers-by into a wonderfully warped new vista. The artist, Anish Kapoor, has referred to the sculpture as “a gate to Chicago, a poetic idea about the city it reflects.” The 12-foot underbelly is called the “omphalos” or navel and multiplies reflections in a vortex.

The sculpture attracted some controversy in 2005, when a professional photographer was denied access to the piece without a paid permit. The artist holds the copyright for the sculpture: this means that, while the public can freely photograph it,
